Super Mario 64 features many memorable challenges, but few are as iconic as the airborne mission known as Mario Wings to the Sky. Found inside Bob-omb Battlefield, this mission requires players to master flight controls using the Wing Cap to collect five coin rings scattered high in the air. Achieving victory in this course demonstrates both precise control and a thorough understanding of the stage layout.
Locating the Bob-omb Battlefield Stage
To access this challenge, head into Princess Peach castle and enter the painting room located on the ground floor to the far left. Jump directly into the painting depicting a Bob-omb and a chain chomp to land inside Bob-omb Battlefield. Once inside the course, select the mission titled Mario Wings to the Sky from the star selection menu.
Unlocking and Using the Wing Cap
Before attempting to fly through the airborne rings, you must ensure the red switch in the castle hall has been pressed to activate red cap blocks. Striking a red block grants Mario the Wing Cap, which allows him to soar across the sky after executing a triple jump or launching from a cannon. Utilizing the cannon located near the water area provides the ideal trajectory to reach the highest coins.
Collecting the Five Airborne Yellow Coins
The core objective of this challenge is to collect five specific coins positioned in the center of floating coin rings. Aim the cannon toward the sky rings and fire Mario directly through the central path of each ring. Gathering all five coins spawns the Power Star on a nearby wooden platform, allowing you to complete the mission successfully.
Tips for Flight Precision and Star Retrieval
Maintaining gentle control while steering in the air prevents Mario from losing altitude too quickly while collecting the required coins. Adjusting camera angles before launching ensures maximum accuracy when aiming for the rings. After collecting the final coin, carefully land near the star platform to claim your reward without taking fall damage.
